Singer, Songwriter
A true icon of Canadian Music, Shari Ulrich is a gifted songwriter, musician, humanitarian, and the lead influence behind the Songbird Tenor Guitar. With 25 records and 2 Juno awards to her credit, Shari remains a warm, down-to-earth human being, and it’s impossible to attend a performance without being mesmerized by her warmth, charm, humility, and incomparable talent.
The master of flute, violin, guitar, dulcimer, mandolin, and tenor guitar, Ms. Shari takes an inanimate musical instrument and releases its inner voice.
From Shari’s personal page, her words best describe the legacy of this incredible person.
Originally hailing from California, Shari Ulrich settled on the picturesque west coast of Canada in 1970. It was there that she unleashed her incredible passion for music and embarked on a brilliant career that has captivated audiences across North America.
Shari is not your average singer-songwriter.
She is a true virtuoso, showcasing her remarkable talents on multiple instruments including violin, mandolin, piano, guitar, dulcimer, and harmonica. Her melodic voice, enchanting songs, and magnetic stage presence have won over the hearts of fans far and wide.
From her early days with the legendary Pied Pumkin to her ventures with The Hometown Band, Shari’s musical journey has resulted in an impressive discography of 25 albums. She has collaborated with esteemed artists such as Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes (UHF), Barney Bentall and Tom Taylor (BTU), and more recently, The High Bar Gang, a phenomenal 7-piece bluegrass ensemble featuring Barney Bentall and Colin Nairne. Along the way, her incredible talent has earned her 2 JUNO awards, prestigious nominations, an induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, and the coveted 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for English Songwriter of the Year.
It comes as no surprise that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Shari’s daughter, Julia Graff, has followed in her mother’s musical footsteps. Beginning at the tender age of 12, Julia showcased her multifaceted talents as a multi-instrumentalist, accompanying Shari on stage. Julia’s journey led her to pursue a Masters degree in music, specializing in sound recording, from McGill University. She has become a sought-after engineer, producer, and music editor in the realm of film and television. Notably, Julia has collaborated with her partner and fellow McGill graduate, James Perrella, in engineering and co-producing Shari’s last three albums. Julia’s enchanting violin skills and harmonious blend of familial vocals can frequently be heard in both Shari’s live performances and recordings.
Shari’s musical endeavors take her on an exhilarating journey throughout the year, performing in various configurations. Whether she graces the stage as a solo act, a trio including Julia and fellow High Bar Gang member Kirby Barber, or a quartet with pianist Cindy Fairbank, Shari’s talent shines through. Additionally, she continues to mesmerize audiences with her contributions to BTU and the High Bar Gang. Shari is also recognized for her significant contributions to the music community as the producer and host of Vancouver’s esteemed SongBird North series, a role she has graciously served for an extraordinary 23 years on behalf of the Songwriters Association of Canada.
An accomplished and dynamic performer, Shari has the remarkable ability to make any audience feel right at home. Her insightful lyrics, combined with her genuine warmth and sparkling humor, create an intimate atmosphere that brings the audience into her world.
